Thanks to all my supporters, but the reality of a too-crowded race has forced me to withdraw. There are some "not-so-democrats" runing as democrats in the primary race. It is more important that Sean Mullally, an individual who repesents the real values of our Democratic party, wins this race. If I were to continue as I have been, there is a chance an "elephant in donkey's clothing" could win the primary election. Therefore, I have given my full support to Sean.
Sean Mullally's blog entry on this event can be found at http://networkedblogs.com/5CiCO.
We live in a country that has given away billions of dollars in aid to other countries. We are spending trillions of dollars on wars in foreign countries. Yet, we are not willing to provide aid to our own citizens or fight for the rights of the unfortunate and victims of catastrophic illness here in America.
At the least, it is embarrassing.
When it comes to needing help, what most people do not realize is everyone (except for the Warren Buffets of the world) is only one illness away from bankruptcy, one house fire away from homelessness, and one mishap away from death. What I consider a shame is we don't have an effective safety net to catch those who fall on hard times due to no fault of their own. Consequently, they fall between the cracks and are lost as productive citizens of our community.
As a state representative, I will have little to say about the national health care program. However, at the state level, health care coverage will be an issue for everyone. Every plan put forth from both sides of the political aisle must be thoroughly debated and evaluated to ensure that it is the best plan for the majority of Michigan residents. Plans that simply cut benefits are far too simplistic a solution.
They run the risk of failing to meets the needs of not only some of our most needy citizens but lowering the quality of health care of all.
What are the health care priorities of our State and Nation? What is good heath care for Michigan's citizens? Is high quality, universal health care as much of a concern as clean water and air? …a safe community? ...a quality education for every child? ...job security?
All of these issues are part of an overall package for the well being of our communities. All of these issues are part of our Constitutional Right of “pursuing happiness.” I believe good health is a right as part of the American dream, not a privilege for those that can afford it.
Make State and Federal Representatives that we vote into office have the same coverage as the lowest coverage of any public or private plan offered in the State(for state offices)/Country(for federal offices). If they want something with better coverage, they can pay for it themselves.
Please support Steve Markel’s simple solution for health care by donating, volunteering, and voting for Steve Markel for State Representative in the August 3 primary.
